I normally don't like running stories about obesity. First of all, there are too many of them. And they are really depressing. But I do have to give a shout-out to Oregon. Oregon is the only state in the country whose obesity rate has not increased, according to the Trust for America's Health. Oregon's rate of 21 percent was unchanged. No surprise to my relatives, those living in the southeast are the most likely to be obese. More than 25 percent of adults in 10 states are obese: Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas, Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana and South Carolina. Mississippi had the highest rate of obesity, with 29.5 percent of adults classified as obese in 2004. Colorado is the slimmest state with a 16 percent obesity rate. So, way to go, Oregon. You're not getting any fatter, and that's enough reason to celebrate. How sad!!
