Atkins goes broke

We could blame the fall on a short-term solution (low-carb) to a long-term problem (obesity). And Atkins Nutritionals Inc., can certainly bounce back from its Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Compettition didn't help as well. But what shot it down is its deceptive "sugar alcohols" policy. The term "net carb" was controversial from the start because it didn't count sugar alcohols. Maltitol and its many cousins were held up as carbs that didn't count because of their lack of impact on blood sugar. However, the human body reacts to the sweetness in the product, causing disruptions to the system. Not to mention that disruptions by multiple trips to the bathroom if you ate too many sugar alcohols. Still, Atkins gets credit for helping people to understand the concept of carbs. And while I thought he was too harsh overall on limiting carbs, it might be good initially to limit them to get your body used to a more normal level of carbs.
